We live about a 1/2 mile away from my sons school. He's ridden his bike to school since 1st grade…

I feel like 8 years old is to young to be left unattended especially riding a bike. Just my opinion. No judging here.

Definitely a conversation that should be had! As well as to never go a different way for any reason. I walked home from school with a friend everyday from 1st grade, I was 6. I almost got hit by a car because we took a different route than normal. He wanted to cross the train tracks under a road everyone speeds on because it was faster, there were two guys standing under it and I got uncomfortable so I went up the hill to the road and bolted across.

That is very scary. I would occasionally walk part way to just to monitor how he follows the safety rules. I know we always want to put full trust in our kids, but peer pressure is real! Hopefully all the kids learned the lesson that their friend learned the hard way.

@christina946, there are about 10 kids ranging from 5-12 and where I live they only cross 1 street where there is a crossing guard. The other boy lives in a different neighborhood

@amysbabies, yes they follow the rules (I ask other parents who walk). Luckily where we live they only cross 1 street where there is a crossing guard. His friend has to cross a few streets
