Imagine getting ONLY three months, or less 😭 That is the reality for us Americans, and it sucks.

@scruffy.nerf.herder, Here even husbands can take parental leave. Can you take longer if your employer agrees or is that it and you must go back.

@maddoxsmama, @beakymcspence, I’ve always thought it was pretty fantastic that Canada offers that! Too bad the US won’t follow suit.

FMLA mandates that your employer must hold your job/position for you for up to 3 months. At the 3 month mark, your employer is no longer obligated to keep your position. And this is unpaid time for most people.

I got short-term disability for 5 weeks, which is about 60% of your regular pay, and then I used vacation time I had saved up until that was gone. We had about 3 or 4 weeks without any pay, but I took my full 12 weeks. I was a little peeved that a natural birth got the same amount of weeks of short-term disability as my C-section did. (I definitely had a rough recovery!). But then I thought about all the women who don’t even get that, and felt pretty grateful. This is why you see US women going back to work at 5-6 weeks, because they can’t afford to miss work any longer 😢

My husband had to use vacation time, but was allowed to take several days off at time of birth.

@scruffy.nerf.herder, We don’t get our full pay on Maternity leave. You only get a percentage like you mentioned. If you have a csection you should get more time!! Omg

@beakymcspence, @scruffy.nerf.herder, yea I think it’s like 60% of your wage that the government covers and some employers will contribute as well. I’m lucky enough to have a job that contributes the rest so I get my full wage

And that one year goes by super fast!!! Your so lucky your employer gave you a top up. I wasn’t eligible for some reason

@maddoxsmama, @scruffy.nerf.herder, We as union workers get wage supplementation by our employer. Not all employers do though so it depends on what you do and who you work for.
