Does anyone here know someone deaf? I’m starting to learn asl and make a career out of speech therapy with special needs kids. I’m getting more into it and wanted to give my children, who will also be learning to sign, a sign name. But I read that it’s something a deaf person has to “gift” you with. I wanted to know if this was true. Thanks.

@aussiexjane, neither did I. My mom grew up learning sign from a friend whose brother was deaf and never knew this either.

Well I’m glad I asked! Im wanting to adopt a child that’s deaf and I wanna work within the community so it’s better to know now. Thank you!

Yes that’s true. And it’s also rude to ask for one, like you said it’s something they gift you with not something you can ask for. Until you are given one you just spell your name

My SIL & BIL are deaf and so are their spouses. From what I understand, yes. They are the ones to give you your sign name. Its part of the deaf culture.

I’ve heard that too. Not sure if it’s true or not though
