Never remember having such a crazy long school supply list when my parents went shopping for us.

This is sadly what happens when schools don’t have enough funding to supply classrooms with everything they need year round. My mom is a teacher and when I was younger I was always jealous because she was constantly spending her own money on classroom supplies because everything ran out by winter break. But now that I’m an adult I see why she did it.

Looks like you're purchasing things for the teacher as well.

I would ask if these are neccessary or merely a wish list for the teacher? Or the other kids whose parents didn't purchase supplies?
I got lucky this year and our supply list was weak at best but we purchased many extras for the teacher.

Wow, that's crazy! The schools around here supply everything the students need. Even when I was in school everything was supplied.

I’m a teacher and that list looks standard. And @jneill is right, some of these items probably won’t last all year.

@scream.queen @jneill @lovelily @d-lane-knee11 am trust me my post is not about not having to do my part as a parent and help out the teachers and not have them have to buy their own supplies it's about a county that can't give the elementary students what they need but a friends son is going to be a freshman in high school and ALL the freshmen are given chromebooks to use. Wth but u can't get pencils and notebooks?????

Yep. They are probably using it for the entire class and stuff for the teacher. My kids school does this. I spend almost 100.00 per a child on JUST school supplies! Its bullshit. I found myself only grabbing half of the amount they asked for, unsharphend pencils and stuff like that, because it is not my job to buy stuff for the other students. I pay fees. Plus, we found out last year, the un used supplies got given away at random and thrown away. If my kids want extras or cute stuff. I have to put my kids name on them in big bold letters or I will find out the teacher gave it to another kid.

It is crazy how big the lists have gotten. My daughters looks a lot like this. It’s a good thing it wasn’t like that when I went to school. My single mom raising 3 of us kids would’ve never been able to afford it.

@basicwitch I have heard of teachers returning supplies to the store for credit on gift cards to use as they wish. I'm only hoping that isn't true.

My stepsons first grade school list was insane. Not just "pencils" they wanted Ticonderoga pencils --the expensive ones-- and Purel hand sanitizers and Bic Fine Point pens, Puffs tissues....ah, those bitches got some Equate brand from us. It's hard enough to get supplies for more than one child and they're going to add specifics? Nah.

That's ridiculous... My baby girl starts PreK and have a list too it isn't so bad. When I was in school the only thing I remember my mom bringing was extra clothes and tissues or wipes that's it.

@lovelily I honestly wouldn't be surprised. Next year I'm just buying supplies just for my kids. I'll buy one of everything and my children's names will go on them, I'll contribute to the tissues and sanitizers for everyone but that's it.

@basicwitch helping other kids is fine, even though they could ask, but throwing stuff away??? what the heck??? why don't they give those back??? people bought them for lots of money... but if the school bought them, then hell would break lose, if things get destroyed...
muksu·
what are you using the wipes for??? when I was in school, we needed writing stuff pens/paper/folder, and stuff for arts class, but books and all came from school... no weird extras
here where I live now, you have to buy your own school books... they are expensive... and then you can sell them again for like half the price???? even though you never used them -.- it really sucks... even school is to expensive this days... 😭 and yes, you get free horrible school food... I would better bring my own, just like way back when... and being home at lunch time (1pm) was much better!!!

Damn my son is going into grade 6 and I haven’t had to buy him any school supplies really other then pencils and I send in some boxes of tissues. I’m kind of confused at why each child needs not one but two packages of dry erase markers tho, sounds like they are supplying the teacher for years to come depending on how many students are in the class.
