Stop talking crap on girls/guys who get into new and better relationships immediately after getting out of a disgustingly toxic one! Do you know how long a relationship like that is actually over with before someone has the heart to leave? Because they are scared to leave? Because they are scared of the unknown? Scared of being physically hurt or mentally destroyed? Just mind your business and do whatever is best for YOU and YOUR family.

Coming from a divorced 21 year old (yeah only 21, insane right?) who could NOT take the abuse any longer, especially since my daughter seen and heard everything that would happen. I was just lucky enough to leave before she could understand anything. But because of she was surrounded with everyday every time someone yells at me (even jokingly) she will scream bloody murder, cry running to me, and want me to hold her. Almost as if she was trying to protect me. The health of your relationship DOES affect your children no matter the age!! It’s crazy though because almost everyone who knew what was happening was telling me “marriages are supposed to last through good and bad” “he just needs your help to get better” NO. NO. NO. CHANGE WAS NOT COMING AND I WAS NOT WAITING. I will not risk my daughters mental health, my mental health, our happiness, our FUTURE, etc. just because I stayed in an abusive relationship. No one knows who a person really is until they are behind closed doors. Some people just really have so many people fooled.

I will never apologize for doing what was best for me and my daughter.

I had to convince my friend that yes, your daughter is only two, but no, she's not too young to understand; She's watching her dad treat her mom like shit and learning that the answer to any problem is violence. She's 5.5 now and going to therapy for anger issues, and I don't for a second doubt it was from watching her dad blow up over stupid shit.

"Marriages are supposed to last through good and bad" it true, but the bad that refers to is sickness, loss of a job, losing a family member, etc, NOT abuse.

@nomli, EXACTLY. Some people think bad means abuse and that’s the sad part. My daughter was 6 months when I left and now she’s 15 months and has these nervous issues with loud noises and yelling. My boyfriend will tickle my feet and I scream because I’m SO ticklish! And every time he does it she will cry, scream, and just yell for me wanting me. Even though we are just playing. I have no doubt in my mind that is from all the yelling and throwing things my ex husband did.

@micgennyy, oh man, poor baby. And at this age there's it's pretty impossible to explain the difference to her. I'm sorry you had to deal with that, and I'm sorry she's still dealing with it. Therapy is definitely helping my friends daughter, though. I can see the changes in her. But she's older, too.

My friends biggest argument against leaving was that she didn't want her daughter to grow up in a broken home. I told her a broken home is a million times better than a dysfunctional and abusive home.

I’m currently trying to get my bff to leave her hubby. He’s super abusive, threatens to snap her neck and kill their son, and recently developed a hell of a cocaine habit. She found out the other day that he did it in front of their son. I’m so scared he’s going to hurt them I make sure that I touch base with her at the same time every night. She’s sent me the recordings of his threats in case something happens. It’s awful.

I’m glad you got out as quickly as you did. It’s your job to protect your daughter and you did the absolute best thing for her mental health in the future. You’re a good mom. 💖
