So I've noticed a flat spot on my son's head. I hold him constantly or baby wear him already and everyone already thinks I spoil him. I'm so confused how this happened. I'm worried he is going to have to get a helmet. I read an article with steps to take to try to fix it without a helmet. Has anyone had any success with this? Do I have to take him to the pediatrician right away or can this wait a month and a half while I try to fix it?

My son had a helmet and through that experience I learned that the older the baby is when they start wearing a helmet, the longer they need to stay in a helmet. You can always start working on the steps at home at the same time you set up an appointment with the pediatrician. I believe it took us 6 weeks from pediatrician appointment to evaluation with cranial tech to getting the helmet. And that’s plenty of time to start doing stuff at home while still getting the opinions of the doctors.

My son had a flat head but once he was able to roll around and like sleeping on his tummy it is fixing itself.

@bailyanne I'm hoping the same! I don't want to have to make him wear a helmet! He is just starting to sit up and roll well.

The ped noticed the same thing with sawyer, we just made sure to always turn his head to the opposite side while he was sleeping and it ended up being nothing to worry about. My friends daughter did need a helmet tho, but she had torticollis (I believe is the word) where it’s the neck muscles that needed to be stretched and there are at home exercises for that as well.

@mct, you’re welcome! We hoped time and at home stuff would help, but after 3 evals by 3 separate people (ped, pediatric chiro who specialized in cranial stuff, and the people at cranial tech) they all said he needed a helmet and it was most likely due to positioning when he was in me. While the helmet wasn’t as terrible as I thought it would be, definitely do what you can at home to see if it helps and alleviates the need for it. Good luck!

@humblewarriormama thank you so much! I took him in today and Dr said to just keep doing those home things and that he thinks it will be fine. So we are implementing changes and hoping!
