Um completely new tothis breastfeeding thing but I gotta be doing something wrong here. My supply is pretty good like if i sqeeze i squirt good and can get about an oz out of each side when pumping. But i feel like im not doing something right.. The pump hurts and my nipples are cracked already not to mention this little gorl can eat from both sides thenstart rooting around 10 minutes later so ive been offering her pumped milk and she's taking about 2 oz of that. I have no idea what's going on..

You may not have the right size flange. But pumping is uncomfortable. Helps to pump with some oil on

No need to pump right now. Just feed. They eat all time in the first few days. It’s their way of building your supply. Once you feed, put some milk on your nipples and air dry.

@laniejay see ive been pumping cuz i havent been set on breastfeeding. My intentions were to exclusively pump but now i just dont know

@mom4m, meet with a Lactation Consultant. They’ll make sure you have the correct size flanges which is huge to your pumping success. She can also get you some APNO which will help with the cracking and bleeding.
Test some coconut oil on baby’s ankle to make sure there’s no allergies. Then you can lubricate your flanges before pumping and also put it on your nipples.
Don’t overwork your nipples in the beginning while pumping. Less time, more often and don’t turn it high. Also, sometimes hand expressing will get you more in the beginning.
If you want to EP, I would look up support groups on FB. They’re amazing.
And final note- 2 oz is way too much for a baby that young. Make sure you are pace feeding. There’s great examples on YouTube and also visuals if you google it. 3 days old is more like .5oz to 1oz a feed.

And as for her feeding while in the hospital we tried to only feed her .5 -1oz of formula But she wasnt having it. She would root around, cry and suck on Arms and anything else she could get her mouth on to try and eat. Shes a very very hungry little girl

@mom4m, that’s normal. Doesn’t necessarily mean hunger. It’s engrained in them to build supply.

Maybe offer her a pacifier. A lot of times my son just wanted to suck and wasn't actually hungry, she could just be using you as a pacifier for comfort. I did not want that so I offered it day 1 and also breastfed. I wouldn't offer her your pumped milk after breastfeeding because that could be overfeeding her.

My kids stayed on my boobs all the time they got plenty to eat they just wanted the comfort of being there I could also actually tell the difference between their hunger suckling and their comfort suckling. It’s not as intense when they are just suckling for comfort and they swallow less often because it’s not really about drawing out milk. Dirty diapers and weight gain are the main factors for determine if she’s getting enough from nursing. Also, she could have a lip or tongue tie. My oldest daughter didn’t latch well because of this and it meant that she was eating more often because she wasn’t very efficient at getting milk out, once we got the ties released her feeds got much shorter. All these things can be discussed with a lactation consultant, I highly recommend seeing one.
