Because there have been so many post about carseat safety. On Friday night at 11:30pm I was headed home from the family cabin. Before I left I just had this feeling. I took extra precautions with the car seats. Made sure both kids were buckled in tight with their harnesses position correctly on their chest. I had been on the road for about 30 minutes and the kids had both fallen asleep. I always drive so cautiously with the kids in the car. It didn't matter. The deer popped up from the center of highway while I was traveling at 70 mph. I had no place to swerve, no time to do anything. The only moment I had was enough to realize I'm hitting this deer with my kids in the backseat and to slam on the breaks as it smashed into us. THERE WAS NO TIME AND NOTHING I COULD DO. When I got the car pulled to the side of the road the only thoughts I had were about my kids. The car was completely silent apart from the clicking hazard lights. I got out of the car and raced to the back door to check on them. There they were, my 3mth old son and my 2 and a half year old daughter, both sleeping peacefully, completely unaware that we had just wreaked the car. I'll tell you right now. I said a silent prayer in that moment thanking God that I had taken that time to check and re-check the car seats. I felt validated for all the fights I've had with family members who said I was crazy for never taking them out of the seats in the car and for insisting they stay rear facing until they hit requirements. An accident is just that, an accident. There is no planning or choice as to when they will happen. The only thing as parents we can do is prepare for the worst, so that when all is said and done the worst part of our day, if we are lucky, is a wrecked car and not a coffin.
