I am too, my son hid behind a tree without telling me he was hiding while walking home from school one day and my heart sunk, I straight up told him he can't hide without telling me he's going to hide because if someone was to take him without me seeing and I thought he was just hiding because he'd done it before he would maybe never see me again, since then he tells me before he's about to hide

I think that’s the right way to do it personally. I have to try and simplify it for my almost 2 year old, but I’ve explained gun safety and car seat safety in simple terms to him (guns cause owies and are not ok to play with, our seats protect us in the car in case another car hits us, etc)

I think it’s good to be honest with your kids. In a way that they can understand. Told me 3 year old she can’t run around the park like crazy she has to be able to see me or a stranger might take her and she might not see her family again. She stays close now.

He doesn't understand yet, really, but I tell him the same thing.

I am very honest with my kids. I just had a discussion with my 8 year old about seatbelt safely. Some kid told him, now that he is 8, he doesn’t have to wear one. I told him, that’s not accurate. If God forbid we were hit, he could go flying through the window and he would be killed and there would be no more Danny. They both know, we don’t talk to strangers because there are crazy people who want to hurt kids and I need to see them at the park etc.

I agree with being honest with kids in a kid appropriate way. Our one cat just passed away and my son asked my sister about it and my dumbass sister told him she ran away. 😒 not pleased.

I personally don’t sugar coat anything with my kids, idk I guess we’ll see how it goes with their development because my son is wise way beyond his years sometime I feel like I’m talking to an adult 🤦🏽‍♀️

@ashleyp123, I feel the same way. My 6yo is so wise. I can’t even just spell things any more because she’ll go write it down and sound it out. 🤦🏼‍♀️that with her 6 going on 16 attitude idk what I’m going to do with her. She already tells me she hates me. It use to hurt now I just reply with “love you more” 😂

I’ve gone as far as showing my 3yo and 6yo a child that was in a car accident that wasn’t in a car seat. It scared them a little but they don’t fight me about it.

I’m the same way about wasting food. I showed them pictures of kids in 3rd world countries that are starving. They hardly waste food now. I also showed them someone that had nasty rotting teeth and told them that’s what happens when you don’t brush your teeth(it was a bit exaggerated 🤷🏼‍♀️) I think it gets the point across tho!

The way today's world is, you have to tell the honest truth. Things are not like they once were. More dangerous, sadly.

@rybugg413, I get the weird looks too. My grandparents especially. I try to tell them the world is a different place now

Yeah we make it a point to tell them the facts. It gives them a better idea about the reality of life and they will handle it better than we think they can.

I told my son the truth, because for some reason he thought that if he dies I could bring him back to life with my blood and his dads blood!!! I made sure he understood that if he dies he would never come back to life.

Im straight up honest with ds. Things have to be simplified where hes only 2. But the only thing we havent been straight forward with was when he great grandma passed. He was only a year old, maybe a little older, so we told him she was sleeping. Somehow he remembers that and every time we go to her house or past it he always says grandmas sleeping 💔

I will do or say anything to protect my son, it’s better for him to know what could happen if he does something dangerous

@cprater0033, that’s so sad. My oldest was about 2.5 when our cat got really sick and had to be put to sleep and it was really hard to explain to her that it was goodbye forever and not just see you later. She took it really hard. She’s 6.5 and still remembers.

It breaks my so everytime ds does it. Especially since it was so unexpected.
