I am sure she is a wonderful girl but being 121 at 9 years of age is so very unhealthy.

I think it’s time to make some changes - for the whole household so she doesn’t feel targeted.

Only water to drink. No soda and juices in the house.

Only two snacks a day and let them be small and healthy - fruit or dried fruit. Veggie sticks and so.

Portion meals. Eating as much protein / meat as she wants is fine but limit the carbs ( mushed potatoes, fries, rice). She still needs some fat in her diet as her brain is still developing.

Absolutely no “diet” food. It’s the worst.

And of course exercise. Swimming. Running. Sign up for summer sport. Lacrosse. Day camp and similar.

If you follow those she should lean up in no time.

She is old enough to read some books on nutrition and healthy foods so maybe getting a book on the topic in age friendly format from a local library would be a good idea.

All the best luck to you. Keep those babies healthy.

Sign her up for some extra curricular activities that involve physical activity. Swimming dance or gymnastics even soccer or t ball. It will help with the weight but also give her confidence and the opportunity to make new friends. Be supportive and eat healthy along with her.

Also if she's going through puberty if might be contributing to the weight. What does her pediatrician have to save. 121 isn't necessarily a big deal depending on her height and weight trends. My weight shot up when I went through puberty and it isn't abnormal for young girls to see a sudden difference in weight around puberty.

Since activities and her weight have already been discussed, I’ll focus on helping heal her spirit.

Utilize positive affirmations with her every day. Remind her that she is beautiful inside and out, intelligent, and she is loved. Encourage her to take control of what is making her upset in a healthy way! Offer to go on walks with her, turn up the music in the house and dance with her, and get her into an activity she will love that will give her confidence!

9 is a rough age because they are beginning to grow hair in places they didn’t expect, they’re (possibly) growing breasts, and their emotions about it are all over the place. This is an age where they really start noticing boys and how they notice other girls as well as themselves. It’s also an age where their fellow girls can be downright nasty to them and it hurts their feelings.

@queenmeeks is so right. Be positive. It sounds like she's pre pubescent and what happens now is so critical. Be positive. If the doctor is concerned about her weight then try to get her into shape but just remember that it could be just her body changing. I got my period when I was ten and put on weight just before it but have been the same weight basically ever since.
