At what age did y'all give your kids phone? My son asked for a phone for his next birthday he will be 8 years old next year. I told him I will think about it. I just don't know if it is to early for him to have one.

My oldest just got a phone. She is 11.

In my opinion, 8 is too young. But in my opinion, 11 is as well. Lilly only got a phone now as a trial run for when school starts. She is moving to the middle school this year, While the rest of her siblings are in the lower and upper schools still. (Thise 2 schools are next door to each other. Her school is not near theirs) if we lived in a different area, she would still be in elementary for her grade.... so she wouldn't be getting a phone. So I guess in what I'm saying is it is more situational to me.

My oldest got one at 11 and only because he was diagnosed diabetic and that way if he was having an issue no matter where he was he could call me. I thought it was too young besides that. Now my other son just turned 11 and his friends have had them for years but I still don’t think he’s old enough for all the responsibilities of a phone. He has one that isn’t activated he can’t call he just uses it like a tablet and he was trying to download things I didn’t agree with and I had to put a lock on it

13. And he paid for it himself and pays the monthly bill himself too.

@pettybetty my son school is 30 minutes from our house. Plus my son has asthma and his school waited until after he had a attack to call last year because the nurse said she could handle it. I have a year to think about all the pros and cons plus if I say yes there are going to be rules with the responsibility of a phone.
Victoria·
@babymamaof4 that is a very good reason for a phone. I also agree if you don't agree with something he is down loading he should respect it .
Victoria·
@squishymommy1 that is very good and responsible. Proud mom I bet

@victoria-ashley, they don’t have a choice if they want a phone. A cell phone is a luxury that is your responsibility to pay for if you want it. It is NOT something you are entitled to.

@squishymommy1 yes I agree plus my son will be paying for it even if he is young there is things he can do to make money.

I will add she displayed a very very high level of maturity with a situation that came up... so we have since given a little leadway. She proved she is as responsible as we thought. So she got an upgraded phone.
Our 10 year old, no where near ready for a phone.

@pettybetty, that’s how I feel also. My oldest was more mature and responsible and my 11 year old now isn’t at that same stage like the first.
Victoria·
@pettybetty those are very good guidelines.

My daughter is 7yrs old and has a phone. Verizon has a Gizmo Watch phone. Calls only 4 people that you allow. It has auto answer for mom and dad. No texting and gps locator on the phone. It’s pretty awesome for a small kid.
Victoria·
@sboolay that is awesome but the company we have doesn't have that. They have a little 29$ phone and we can put limitions on it

That phone will do. You don’t want anything expensive because they are still irresponsible at that age and don’t know the value of money. I don’t really think there is a proper age. If you feel like your kid needs it that’s good enough. As long as you check up on them and have their password at all times to get in their phone. There are so many apps out there to help you control your kids phone. I have 2 apps on my teenage daughters phone. One of the apps I can press a button and be able to listen in on her conversations without her knowing. The other app I can set her phone to shut off at a certain time everyday so she is not texting all the time and block her internet use.
