It annoys me when people tell me I need to go on a “date night” and need to “take a break from him”. I didn’t become a mother to ditch my kid. My husband and I LOVE spending time together as a family and honestly wouldn’t enjoy dinner without him trying to eat half of our meal. We don’t get a lot of family time because my husband works so much so we appreciate time together with our son more than alone time. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’ve never once acted annoyed with my son. I love being his mom. Am I tired? Sure. But it’s the best kind of tired.

Everyone is different. It’s not fair for others to tell you what you need. But some people do need it and often people are just trying to be helpful by allowing you that space to know that it’s ok to not want to be with your kid 24/7.

Nice way of Mom shaming.

Well I take breaks from my son because I mentally need them. He has colic and reflux and is already teething and my husband works long hours. I am alone 90% of the time and was diagnosed with PPD. I'm happy that you enjoy spending time with your husband and son but not everyone is like you.

A date night isn't ditching your kid. It's great that you're happy with your situation, but the day may come when you need a break and there's nothing wrong with that. One-on-one time with my husband is good for my marriage and I feel no guilt in occasionally taking time to focus on him.

@masseymomma16, , in no way was I saying it’s wrong to need a break but I don’t appreciate people telling me what I personally need. 🤦🏽‍♀️ No ones situation ever applies to anyone else. My point was simply that I don’t “NEED” to do anything and in turn I am tired of being shamed for not wanting to be away from my son. My post was in response to two people cornering me today at work. I didn’t say people who need a break are bad. I just said I don’t like people telling ME what I need. You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. 🤷🏽‍♀️

@cajuncateral, I’m so sorry to hear about your sons colic on top of PPD. My sister in law suffered from PPD so I know it’s incredibly difficult. I totally understand it being difficult with your husband working long hours. My husband works two jobs and there’s some days where he doesn’t even see our son because he’s gone before he wakes up and home after he’s gone to bed. I think that’s why when my husband does have the free time we’d rather spend it together with our son rather than without him. My husband already feels like he misses too much. If you ever need to vent, I’m always open to lending an ear.

@wafflespancakes, I don’t think there is anything wrong with taking a break when you need it. It’s healthy but I hate that our friends expect us to get a sitter to watch them drink, or go to a party. It was never part of our lifestyle so to be made to feel bad about it on our end, is unfair. Plus because our family time is so limited, we try to take advantage of it when we get it. Maybe when my husbands schedule calms down, we will want time without our son but that time isn’t now. It should be our choice when we feel we want it. Not other people’s judgment of our life.

I apologize if my post seemed to be directed at anyone. I was speaking about myself. Not anyone else’s choices.

@squishymommy1, I appreciate that you tried to understand where I was coming from. No one is wrong for needing it. I just don’t need it at this point in time and am annoyed that everyone insists I do.

@mswedes, I get what your saying. But a lot of people are going to take that the wrong way. Why would someone suggest that to you? Were you complaining about something to make them say that?

@masseymomma16, not at all. Someone was talking about going on a date night with her husband and asked when we had our last one without the baby and we’ve never done that. And then it turned into how I NEED it and that we NEED alone time. Our marriage isn’t hinging on a dinner without our son. A lot of people also told us we shouldn’t elope because we’d regret it, which we did and we don’t. What applies to one doesn’t always apply to another. Why can’t we go about our lives without people expecting us to live our lives like everyone else? We’re not hurting anyone by doing so.

Lots of people make this suggestion to my husband and I as well. I agree with you. I get less than 2 hours a day with my daughter. Sometimes I only see her for 10 minutes in the morning and that's it. I want to spend as much time with my family as I can because I don't get to see them very much. That being said, there's nothing wrong with taking a break or having "me" time, everyone's situation is different. It just so happens mine is not a situation where I require that time away or need it.

@emily526, you obviously put it better than I did. Your point is the one I was trying to make. And like I said, in no way was I saying it’s wrong. It’s just not for me right now.

@mswedes I thought that was the point you were trying to make, so wanted to share. Sorry if I stepped on your toes, but I interpreted the post as you just sharing your experience, not trying to shame other moms. So I wanted to help clarify for you.

@emily526, thank you. I appreciate that so much. I’d never shame another mom unless there is neglect, abuse or blatant ignorance involved. My post was quickly rambled out in the heat of the moment so it definitely could’ve been written better. I appreciate your stepping on my toes. Haha
