QUESTION HELP. So I started a new job but I’m going on leave soon but they are not paying me because I haven’t been there for a year and not eligible for FMLA. Am I able to get some type of assistance(like welfare, Foodstamp/Wic) I can’t get it now because I make too much money now but I’m going to need to get the baby and I some food .(I’m trying to save up as much as I can but you bills and stuff)

Call the assistance office and ask. They can at least give you an answer or point you in the right direction. You might be able to get partial unemployment depending how long you’re on maternity leave for.

@bigmama18, I’m going to call on Monday . I’m actually still on welfare insurance because I wasn’t working at one point and I was pregnant with no insurance . But they are threatening to cut me off because I have a job now and I was working as a temp but now I have the permanent position. I just want to make sure my child has everything.

@noenahiza, should I apply when I take the leave or should I do it now ? I don’t want them to deny me . I’m going to take my leave when I’m 38 weeks and take off work for two months

@sunnyjoy i say after youre leaving because they are going to ask for income and since you said you made alot of money most likely you deny you. But you should apply for wic now you might get wic for you:)

@noenahiza, I think I’m going to wait to apply for all because I looked online income guidelines and I still make to much to apply now 😭 so yeah Im going to wait lol .

I was told by the people from medical (Medicaid) that since my husband and I both work I wouldn’t qualify for any assistance, however she did say that if I waited and applied once I was on leave they could process application as emergency (for medical) and I would at least have it until I go back to work. I’m not sure about food stamps but I’ve always been told that if you apply for food stamps or cash aid they make you put the father of the baby on child support.

I was in a similar situation during my first pregnancy. The guidelines are pretty strict now.
You should definitely apply when you go on leave. Right now, you would be denied. You should be able to get SNAP (food stamps) and WIC - maybe even cash assistance after you’re on leave. You will also qualify for Medicaid if you’re not working and don’t have have medical benefits for you and your baby. Good luck. Hope everything works out. ☺️
