@amysbabies, I’ve delivered at my hospital before but I live in a small county with a small hospital. My hospital is breastfeeding friendly but it also has a nursery in it and doesn’t have a NICU. They also give pacifiers. They don’t have medical grade pumps there they give you a manual pump if you need it. And I would prefer to not use a manual cause there such a hassle if I can just bring my electric one from home.
I say no. If you need to pump there they will give you a kit and let you use one of their hospital grade pumps. And the hospital grade ones are so much better!!! They’ll also give you a nipple shield and lanolin if you are having trouble. All that they bill to your insurance. At least my hospital- I would imagine all in the US would be similar. Is yours a “breastfeeding friendly” hospital? You’ll know because they don’t have a nursery (only for NICU) and don’t give pacifiers- I would check with someone who delivered at your hospital to be sure :).
@kyleigh.e.h, Hmm... your hospital probably has some available if you really needed one. I personally wouldn’t bother taking it, but if it makes you feel better to have it there just in case then go for it!
@ek620, I plan to do both. With my son I pumped from the very beginning but that was out of necessity since he was in the NICU. I was planning to just breastfeed at the hospital and adding pumping sessions on top of breastfeeding right away when I get home from the hospital. But I’m kinda thinking that if for some odd reason something happens and I need my pump at the hospital maybe I should take it. Idk
