Question for my Canadian mamas
Did you get a tax break the year after your maternity leave? I’m worried that next year I’m going to get hit hard during tax season. When rob was on EI a couple years ago he owed a lot the following year.

I owed $2500 after my mat leave 😬😬 the following year though because our kiddo was in daycare, I got $2000 back.

@maddoxsmama, I don’t know of any tax break that pertains to maternity leave. The only tax break I get is the child disability credit on my taxes, but he didn’t qualify for that till he was two.

I owed 80 for last year after being on mat leave for 4 months. Apparently EI doesn't take enough tax off only 10 percent when it's supposed to be min 17 to 22 so I'm sure for this year's taxes I'm screwed lol

Not at all. My husband takes 4 months parental leave (topped up to 95% of his wage) and I take the remaining months. Last time we did this we owed about $2,500 in total.

Open as rrsp and resp (registered retirement savings plan, registersd education savings plan) both can br claimed on taxes. Helps a biy

You can call and ask them to take extra money off for your taxes so that you won’t owe or if you do it will be a minimum amount. They were originally only going to take $16 from $520 every two weeks, since I asked them to adjust that I now pay the highest amount of taxes which is just under $50 and she said good chance I won’t owe anything.
