New here ??
Hey everyone! I got diagnosed with GD on Friday and have been on a strict diet/check BG 4x/day. My Dr is closed for Labor Day and I was hoping maybe someone here can help me. My glucose readings have been in the 80's consistently except first thing in the morning/fasting. I eat a decent size meal at dinner, check my BG 2 hours after and eat a small snack before bed. Nothing sugary. When I wake up to take my BG in the mornings it's in the 60's and I have gotten the shakes. It goes away as soon as I eat breakfast w/a glass of skim milk. What can I do to keep my glucose up a little more throughout the night? Thanks in advance! ?

Hello and sorry to say welcome! I'd say the bedtime snack is the most important thing you eat when you have GD.
It needs to be heavy on the protein with about 30g of carbs. Typically I eat a piece of toast with cheese and extra cheese on the side.
Other things I have sometimes are cheese and crackers, small portion of fruit and 1/2c cottage cheese.
You bedtime snack should be eaten right before you go to bed. Don't eat and then putter around for a couple of hours.
There is a GD 101 post that I recommend you read and it also has snack and meal ideas.
Carbs should always be paired with protein and you do need to eat carbs you just need to balance them. Diabetic diet recommends 3 meals and 3 snacks to keep your blood sugar levelled, so you're eating about every 2 hours.

Thank you for your response! I have been eating my bedtime snack a couple hours before bed so I'll start eating it right before bed instead.
I did read the 101 post and "favorited" it. Great info!
I'm pairing all of my meals/snacks with protein/carbs and a little bit of fruit except at bedtime. I'll add some fruit to my bedtime snack too.
Today I'm struggling. I can't get my BG over 70. 69 is the highest it's been all day. It was only 62 when I first woke up. I had an omelet w/turkey bacon, baby spinach, tomatoes, low fat cheese and green onions w/a glass of skim milk and a few pieces of watermelon for breakfast. 2 hours later my BG was 69 and I was feeling shaky. I immediately ate a lean beef burger on whole wheat w/lettuce, tomato and onion w/watermelon slices and a glass of skim milk. Still felt shaky so I also drank a very small glass of sweet tea and instantly felt better. I have an alarm set to check my BG again in 2 hours.
Shouldn't it be higher??
Also, I am eating every two hours so idk why this is happening? ? lol

The only thing I can think of is to add more carbs to your meal. What are you planning for dinner?
Lindsay·
Rotisserie chicken w/salad and brown rice. I think you're right.
After lunch I drank a small glass of sweet tea. 2 hours later my BG was 78 so that seemed to help.

Try 1 cup of brown rice with your meal tonight. Test at 1 hour after because that is when your sugar peaks. Your target for 1 hour would be less than 138.
Lindsay·
The only reason I've been testing 2 hours after is because that's when my Dr instructed me to do so. I have a log to keep and bring with me to my next appt.

Yes, and totally do what your doctor told you. I'd just be curious to see what your one hour bg is--like are you peaking higher and then dropping fast or is your sugar not even rising that much to begin with.
Some ladies test at 2 hours and some test at 1hr, it all depends on your doctor and GD team.
Will your doctor be setting you up with a dietitian?
Lindsay·
That makes sense. I am going to test at one hour and again at 2 hours tonight.
I see my MFM Dr on the 12th. Im high risk because of a seizure disorder so he's going to be handling my GD from here on out. My OB didn't say anything about a dietitian when she called but I'll check after the holiday weekend.

How did it go?
Lindsay·
Much better. At 1 hour it was 109 and at 2 hours it was 78. So for my bedtime snack I had a wheat bagel with peanut butter and banana. This morning my fasting was 76, big improvement from yesterday.
Thank you! I really appreciate your help!!! ??
