@mommyofavaka for the most part custody laws are all the same in the entire state... The only thing that varies is state-to-state but the basics are pretty much similar.
@mommyofavaka here's a few things to look for when getting an attorney... Tell him to keep in mind to look at reviews... Also some attorneys will charge a retainer fee plus every time any paperwork is filed or done they will charge for that as well... They'll also charge for meeting times and they will charge at the end of the case to get there half... The best way to go about it if on a budget is to find an attorney in your area that would charge a fee of a flat rate- for example 2500 in the beginning and then if in the end there was any more charges that needed to be added your friend could be on a payment plan... One of the best attorneys I know is Carla Galubavic- another is Sunny Simon but she is quite pricey...
@mommyofavaka He'd have to be getting some sort of county assistance to be eligible for a public defender... In my opinion best bet is to go with them personal private attorney
@mommyofavaka what city does he live in? My family owns a law firm... We are based in Nacogdoches Texas and Cleveland Ohio... Attorney fees can Skyrocket... Sadly to say but money does talk in this case...

My fiance paid 100 to file for custody of his son and then a court date was set.(for temporary custody) We paid our lawyer 1200 the first time. Which covered court costs and paper work. We then had to serve his ex with the papers and the last court date was set. And we paid another 750 but he wanted 1500 but because she didn't fight us we only paid the 750 and then we got full custody.
It varies... But no more than $200... If the father can't afford it- the father can apply for a fee waiver... However- he'd have to be approved for this.... What cost the most is an attorney and court cost... But- if he can afford an attorney he can be appointed one.
