Giving birth is such a life changing experience, no matter how many times you do it. The idea of a new life being brought into this world, a beautiful and innocent soul, is incomparable. A rush of emotions often exceeds all else, an urge to protect and love, to devote your entire being to doing this whole parenting thing “right”. The problem is, life happens. We are human. Perfection is unrealistic, although we tend to flee from reality and hold ourselves to impossible standards. Parenting has become a competition, and we spend more time comparing our lives and decisions to those around us than we have in the past. Nobody wants to talk about the bad. Nobody wants to address the negative feelings that can consume us after giving birth. The sadness and depression that can creep into our lives and torment us, leaving us feeling alone and guilty. At times we have no explanation for the sadness, therefore these feelings can not possibly be valid, can they? Scrolling through social media and feeling even more alone and misunderstood as we see other moms glowing with joy and happiness, not stopping to consider that we may not be alone in this. The truth is, being a mom is difficult for all moms in different ways, at different times, and sometimes to greater degrees. Whether it be the baby blues, PPD, anxiety, or any other mental and emotional battle that you are facing, remind yourself today that you are not alone.
