Would this bother you guys...?
When I was pregnant with my daughter (my first child) there was 10 granddaughters and no grandsons in my Husbands family, so they told me I better have a boy because that's what they wanted and he'd be spoiled because he'd be the first boy.
I should also add that EVERYONE wanted to have the first boy and was competing so every time one of my numerous sisters in laws would pop up pregnant both parents would ALWAYS be hoping for a boy. So everyone wanted a boy for themselves when they had a baby.
They told my sisters in law the same things when they had their babies (who turned out to all be girls obviously). So anyways I very happily got a girl and got comments by both family and even friends of the family such as "wow another girl, you guys need a grandson for yourselves" and "we need a boy" as well as me getting told in a joking manner (we don't want another girl in the family).
My brother in laws new girlfriend (we will call her Amber) gets pregnant with her first child and tells everyone how badly she wants a boy (surprise surprise) and knows that's what it is. Family laughed behind her back and would say "she ain't getting a boy, it'll be another girl for the family"
Well it's a boy and Amber is rubbing it in and loving it all. Family friends are congratulating her on having the first grandson and family won't stop saying how he's the only boy/little man after ALL those girls.
So now I've had multiple family members come to me privately (including my brother in laws ex wife and daughters mom, whom he was with before Amber) and they tell me things such as ambers son is the only grandchild my in laws bother with and he's put on a pedestal for being the only boy. Someone even said "Amber thinks she's so special for having the first grandson". Keep in mind all of these people have anywhere from no kids up to 6 girls themselves and would like a boy. In fact every single one of them wished for a boy with every pregnancy.
What sucks is I hear of this happening in other families (except it's normally only 2-3 of the same gender not 11 like there is girls in my situation) and it seems like people almost ALWAYS want the only/first boy in a family of girls or the only/first girl in a family full of boys even if it's THEIR first child. I've asked people why this is and they've told me so their child can be special, so they can have that title, so their child can have a novelty feel, and other detailed positive reasons on why this is desired. I've heard the only grandson after 11 granddaughters be called novelty rare and special and any time this happens it seems to be an automatic assumption they will be favored, spoiled, and receive all of the attention just because they are the only one of that gender.
I even read an article the other day about how a little boy was born into a family after ten girl cousins. They were congratulating the mom (it was her first child) and calling the little boy a "gem". Stating how rare it is to have 10 granddaughters followed by the first/only grandson. Something like a 1/20,000 chance. I still hear about the first grandson thing from time to time and how she had the first grandson and he's the only boy and favored and she thinks she's special and likes that she had the only boy.

My mil says that about her family. She has 3 granddaughters but they are all older and she wants another but every one is having boys there's been 7 boys born since the last girl. She always comments about me having all boys (3) but I told her maybe its not meant for your family to have a girl right now.

Sometimes it's a genetic thing, some men aren't easily capable of producing the x or y chromosome resulting in families having all boys or all girls. The woman always produces an x chromosome and then the man has the gender deciding factor in their sperm and usually has x and y chromosomes and whichever one meets the egg is the deciding factor. Men who can't produce one or the other easily usually pass that down to all boys in their family so Amber's son will most likely have the same genetic issue.

thanks guys it is very strange. I sometimes hear of this happening in other families (like my friends and her siblings had all boys and when someone finally had a girl something similar happened) but not to the extent. Of course there was only 4 boys born before the first girl in my friends situation. I know eleven of the same gender is far fetched. I just wondered if you guys would be jealous of this or want "the boy" in my situation because it seems like everyone is jealous of my nephews mom, and I know that before any of this, anytime someone was expecting I would say how sweet what do you wish for, and no matter who it was, they would say "we are hoping for a boy for sure!", that's been every single person that's had a child in the family even if it was their first child. It probably has to do with the situation and there being no boys and them wanting to have the first. My nephews mom is my husbands brothers girlfriend also.
