At what age did your toddler start saying words? We speak to my son 90% of the time in spanish…

My son is 20 months and is now sayin so many words. I was a bit concerned at his 18 month appointment because he was only saying about 12 words. I think your son will be fine

When you raise your kids bilingual they tend to speak later. I really wish I knew another language but one of my friends recently told me what his parents did while he was growing up. He’s Italian and his mother would only speak to him in Italian while his dad would only speak to him in English. There was someone else in his life who would only speak to him in Spanish and he’s fluent in all three. Kids brains are serious sponges especially for language when they are this little. I would have one of you speak English at home and then he will know both when he goes to school 😊

We speak Spanish at our house and my 2 yro speaks perfectly, she’s a lil guacamaya😂 I think she was a like 13 months when she started saying more and more words. She’s now learning some words in English and she understands when I speak to her both languages. The more you talk to your baby the better. I now have full convos with my daughter as if I were having one with an adult.

Some children don’t speak right away and you shouldn’t worry. My son didn’t talk for the longest time then woke up one day and started saying a bunch of words out of no where. By age two if he isn’t talking enough they may suggest a speech therapist. But since you’re teaching him two languages he might just take a little longer. But as long as he’s understanding what you’re telling him no reason to worry

My son is 4yrs, my family speaks mainly Lao to him and Spanish with his dads family. For some reason he won’t speak full Lao/Spanish but he can understand every single word, I really hope he picks up both. I don’t think it’s ever too early to start teaching!

My son was about 14-15months... My daughter was way earlier- she was able to say at 10months "say cheese", Mami, papi, no, hi, duck, puppy and possibly a few more... By 13m she was speaking small sentences... By 15m she spoke over 100words and now (almost 20 months) she speaks very well in sentences... All kids are completely different... My friends son who is 3yrs old is just now starting to speak- he did have to see a speech therapist- but he's definitely starting to talk now.

FYI- in my home it's a bit CRAZY bc.. We have 3 language's... My mom's Family speaks Italian and my son his fathers Family only speaks Italian so alot of the time- that's what he is speaking in... My daughters father is Puerto Rican and speaks Spanish and his family doesn't know English- so they only speak Spanish as well... Where my father (Puerto Rican Family) speaks Spanish- so my daughter speaks more Spanish than anything... We haven't had any issues with her speaking correctly either... Sometimes it has been a bit difficult for my son because Spanish and Italian can be a bit close so it has been a bit confusing to him in the past... But we've never had any problems yet...

@mamamaysa My step daughter who's 16yrs old- she understands every word of Spanish- but will not speak it... Lol I don't know if she feels uncomfortable or what- she's a very quiet girl- and shy.

@danielzamor2007, my son for some reason won’t speak it fully to anyone but his Grandpa 🤦🏻‍♀️ I even read a Spanish book once to him and he flat out told me.. ‘mom, you don’t speak Spanish’ lol
