I waited until after with my first. I ended up not needing much so if you're tight on money (like I was) I would definitely wait. If not, go all out! It's hard to resist baby stuff lol.

I'll wait, that way you won't mistakenly buy the same thing someone else is bringing to the shower. Saves alot of money too!!

If you absolutely cannot wait, you could always buy stuff but just don't open or take tags off. That way if you get any duplicates you can always return or exchange them. That's what I did lol. I couldn't resist certain items. I was too excited to wait for my shower. Lucky for me tho, hardly anyone shopped off my registry. I only had to return one thing.
