hair edges on baby ?

So my daughter is mixed with white and African American and I have been trying to figure out this styling with her edges. And I can't seem to get it to swoop the right way or maybe I'm using the wrong kind of styling cream. I use a toothbrush maybe thats not good to use? Just wondering if anybody here has any tips on doing the edges of her hair ? she has so much of it.
