Are These Contractions? First-Time Mom's Experience at 39 Weeks

Maybe contractions?

I'm a first time mom and I was overweight to begin with. I'll be 39 weeks tomorrow and I've been having pains like what I imagine a contraction would feel like. I can feel my stomach tighten at the top but not at the bottom. Has any one else experienced this?
