0,3,6+ nipples for bottles?

Those of you bottle feeding, are you buying the different nipple flow according to the month or are you taking a sterilized needle to widen the hole? Ftm here! Not sure I want to buy nipples. Are you supposed to widen the hole, or put another hole in the nipple?
