Afraid of the crib?

My son has been a decent sleeper most of the time but lately he won't sleep in his crib, not for naps or at bed time. He cries before you even put him down..we've tried to let him cry it out but it'll go on for a hour and he never calms down. But if we lay him on our bed for a bap or lay with him at night he'll sleep with out a problem. I've seems some suggestions of moving him to a toddler bed. But I'm not sure what else to do...
