double jointed ankles??

So after Grey's doctors appointment last week, his pediatrician told us the reason he's having trouble walking unassisted is that his ankles are double jointed and that makes him unsteady. Has any one else heard or delt with anything like this? Just wondering what I can do to help him learn to walk. His doctor suggested getting high top shoes to help support his ankles, which we've done just wondering what else i can do.
