When to start birth control??

So I had my pp follow up with my doctor yesterday and he got me set up with a prescription for birth control pills. He said that since I haven't started my period since having my son that I could start the pills at any time. I've always been told and instructed to start them after my period had started. Anyone else get contradicting instructions like this?
