Baby's finger nails

My baby girl finger nails are like claws! I mean they hurt, I know because she has clawed my chest a few times....I cut them every other day and it seems like they grow back the next day with a vengeance. On top of that when she gets sleepy or agitated she starts to rub and scratch her face....they are driving me crazy....yes I've tried mittens and socks but she doesn't keep them on. I hate seeing little scratches on her face, I don't know what else to do. Anybody else going through this
