My husband's father passed when he was 4 yo. Over time he developed a father-like relationship with his neighbor that continues even today. He refers to him as his godfather even though he was really his sponsor at confirmation. Regardless, my husband asked him and his wife to be the baby's godparents; but he said no. He has no children, but 6 godchildren already and shared that was the reason. I feel so bad for my husband because he's identified that he wanted his "godfather" to be our baby's godfather for years.
