Speech delay

When do they worry?

I wouldn't be worried. My first was behind average in her speech at that age, I was referred to speech therapy but didn't take her as I thought it was a bit ridiculous. She's almost 3 now and her speech is amazing. Try not to worry, it will happen in his/her own time. There's plenty of time for speech therapy in the future if need be x

My son was 2 1/2 and just not where I thought he should be. We read him books from the day he was born and loads of socializing and spent all his time with me plus a couple mornings of daycare.

I was starting to get v worried.

I did calm down when i noticed he wasn't a very needy kid and just happy to do his own thing so just didn't feel the need to talk much.

Plus, one of my friends in early childhood said "watch his gross motor skills, he throws so well, runs, jumps, never falls over. He's really coordinated. His gross motor skills are just working harder than his fine motor skills that language requires".

So I relaxed a bit, let him watch a little more tv than usual (lots of talking stuff like sesame st and playschool) and one day... Boom. Not sentences but almost.

X

Thanks for all your replies. I think I'm going to take the dummy away, talk constantly at home about what I'm doing lol, and then see if she has improved at all in the next 6 months. I think I would be brushed off if I were to go get her checked now as she isn't even two yet. A lot can happen in two months, so hopefully she takes off soon

MissZee, we have just started having weekly play dates with some friends and their kids are her age so hopefully that helps her, I'm not comfortable with daycare.

Tsvgirl, I wouldn't leave it to five lol but I get what you are saying.

Have you considered a day or two of daycare? It's been a huge help for Buckley and me too I won't lie! We don't have a lot of any family /friends around us so he gets a lot of extra stimulation talking/playing/singing/sharing etc at daycare that he wouldn't normally get. Playgroup would be another good option of you're not comfortable with daycare!

I have a friend who has a boy same age (we had our boys same day) who is ridiculously good at talking from before 2. Like fluent, it's crazy! But her family is huge and he's forever surrounded by others and I think that played a huge part in him being so advanced speech wise.

I thought my daughter was a slow speaker as my sisters kids were having full conversations at 2.

From 2 - 2.5 especially last two months her speech has improved so much. She's an only child too so that plays a big part I think as with siblings around it's quicker for them to pick up words.

She's 2.5 now. And I can't shut her up ?????. She will also says words like - fridge out Or helicopter out of the blue. So each week there is a huge improvement.

What I would do is if she said a word or tried to I would say it correctly and she would then repeat it.

So things like-

Daughter: mum mum ater ater

Me: water catherine would you like water?

Daughter: Yer

Me: yes?

Daughter: yes MUM water

So you make them repeat it by asking with correction.

I would and still do tell her everything we are doing- so at supermarket- im getting milk now- next we need bread etc...

Although they may not repeat it one day they will ! They remember everything!

My sister has just completed her degree in early childhood and all the notes she gave me were so helpful. By 2.5 you should be seeing sentences- signing- basic understanding.

Too early I say. But keep up the talk and reading. Let her help you do things around house and explain what you are doing. So very important and these days you would be surprised how many parents don't do this.

Goodluck!

Hope I didn't babble too much.

You're better off taking her now then at 5 when she is starting school and already behind. Even if she ends up just catching up in 6 months or so it's better to be safe then sorry and get it worked on asap

Bradley has a severe speech and language delay

At 2 he was not saying any words not babbling and had no interest in repeating words or sounds

I took him to a speech therapist for an assessment and to see if he was just "slow" or there was something else going out

Turns out he is autistic and has global developmental delays

We now do speech therapy weekly and lots of at home activities

If you are worried at all its best to get it checked out

Hun if your worried, maybe Google a few speech therapy activities and practice them at home and see how they go?

Or you can ask the doctor for an enhanced primary care plan and see a speechie, they are amazing and will let you know if they are delayed or just fine. (The EPCP makes it covered by Medicare so not crazy expensive)

I take my 4yr old once a fortnight as he is delayed, and my 2 year old comes with me (due to lack of babysitters) and he now does not stop talking ?

I went to a paediatrician cause my doctor was concerned cause cooper wasn't repeating words when he was asked, couldn't clearly say words. The pead told me this and since then I haven't been concerned..

If the child

1. Knows what they want to say but get frustrated in trying

2. Understands when you ask them to do something.

3. Can put pictures to words like car, tree, dog etc

These are the fundamentals that they need. He said speech therapy is useless at 2 because they don't understand. If there's still an issue at 3-3.5 that's when you need to seek help.

Since the visit 3 or so months ago, cooper has thrived so much! He even counts back from 5! Although they're not clear words, I can understand what he's trying to say and he now copies me.

I found simple things like counting with him when walking up or down stairs, telling him everything I was doing for example when I cook him toast is say 'we get the bread' and he says bread, 'put it in the toaster to cook' he says cooking and then he waits and when it pops up he says ready!

They pick up so much so fast around 2-2.5!

She's definitely not saying 50+ words, the health nurse said she wasn't worried about her hearing either as she listens to us no worries. I'm so confused ?

She does have a dummy which I try to only let her have at night time. I've read people saying their kids speech improved once it was gone so I'm considering taking it away, I'll just feel really bad..lol

We just had Buckley's 2 year check and she was more concerned than we were so referred him for a hearing test and put us in a playgroup aimed at helping kids who are a little delayed.

I really wasn't concerned until she showed concern because I've been guilty of comparing him to other kids all the time when I know I shouldn't so I wasn't worried about the speech.

He's definitely saying the recommended 50 + words but not the sentences. I've heard of 3-4 year olds not talking though so I'm as confused as you are!
