4 hours both times. Was ready to leave after 2 hours to be honest, but they made us stay 4 hours, 5 actually with number 2 because their SpO2 monitors were playing up and they couldn't get a good trace on my son, but he was fine, it was a machine issue.

1st i stayed 4 nights and 2nd i stayed 2. Personally I never even considered going home only hrs afterwards it just scares me! I had no issues or need to stay. I went public both times and had my own room 99% of the time. I did share with my 1st but foreign mum so only had hubby visit. If i had a bad neighbor id wanna leave

First-stayed either two or three days/nights. Hated it because my baby and roomies baby kept setting the other off all night each night...but then the midwives were allowed to take the babies and help mums get some semblance of sleep...decided with my second to leave same day, which was also not a great idea, since we were back the next day with some postpartum issues.
This time I wanted to stay at least a night to be sure everything was OK afterwards. Had similar problems with babies being unsettled and mine wanted to nurse on and off all night long, never letting me put him down for more than ten minutes before crying...endless cycle for two nights and I was over it.
I do think staying one night at least is a good idea, just so you are there if anything does happen, but any more and it's better to me to be home, because at least my husband could take turns looking after baby and getting more than two hours of very broken sleep over a 48 hour period.

I went public because I couldn't afford private . I was lucky enough to get my own room and I stayed for 5 nights . I found it helpful having the nurse to help but I did have a natural birth but tore a lot so I could barely walk the next day . They had to do a pedi check on baby and hearing check and I didn't want to have to leave and come back for those .

I went through the public system that you are talking about. It was a team of 3 lovely midwives & it was amazing :) appointment waiting times were short & knowing the midwives that are going to deliver is awesome!! Could've gone home 6 hours after birth with 5 days of home visits, including hearing test!! But baby had a heart murmur & we had to stay in over night, it's called mgp here (midwife group practice) :) still had the same midwife visit for 5 days :) I highly recommend it :)

#1 was born at 4pm and we went home the next day at 10am (public and stayed in the birthing suite in my own room)
#2 we had to stay 3 nights to get feeding the sorted (he had a cleft palate) I was put in the ward for the second and third night, hated it!
#3 was born at 3pm and they told me I'd be leaving at 7pm when the paediatrician came, they didn't ask me they told me and she didn't end up coming round till 11pm so that was annoying even though I was in my own room instead of resting I ready to go and waiting.

I went private. Stayed 3 nights with both ds. I was in the night prior in labour/waters broken with both so 4 nights overall. As a private patient they like you to stay 5 for financial reasons. With my ds2 I had a midwife visit a couple of times in the first week once we were home. The thought of going home soon after birth scares me. There can be complications for mother and baby. My ds2 had a shocking night on night 2 and they were concerned about his blood sugar levels. They were able to check them then and there and they were fine but if I was at home I would have had no idea that was even a concern. Also the risk to mum of postpartum bleeding not to mention the help I needed with getting them latched pretty much each feed. I would bet money I would have not managed to breastfeed either if we were sent home early.

Bub was born at 10pm on the Friday and we were getting ready to be discharged at lunchtime on Saturday but were asked to stay that night as Bub was still very sleepy and not really interested in breastfeeding. We were discharged 10am Sunday morning. We went public but had our own birthing suite from the time we were admitted at 5am on the Friday, we got moved up to the maternity ward at 5pm on the Saturday but still had our own room :)

I stayed 28 hours. I had to stay 24 hours as Bub pooped in my waters so they wanted to be sure he didn't they an infection. I would have stayed the extra night but I really didn't feel comfortable with the girl I was sharing the room with. She had her family there all the time and they were quite loud, they would come and take my chairs because there was so many of them visiting. She also spent the whole night talking on her phone loudly as well. I just wanted to go home ASAP.
I don't think leaving straight after birth is very good. But each to there own :)

I stayed 5 days with my first, 4 with my second and third. I went private. It was a good break for me to rest and recover. Once your back home ( especially if you have other children) your back to cooking, cleaning, looking after everyone.

yep Bub will be checked by a paediatrician before you can leave ? I was told the only thing they can't do, is the hearing check so I'll have to go back up 24-48 hours after Bub is born. I don't mind that.
that's the reason I want to leave soon after. I've gone and will go public all 3 times and I just remember once one baby woke, it was like a domino effect and all of them woke ? which I know can't be helped sharing with other women + going public.
