Take them out in cold, dry air for a few minutes or put them in a steamy shower. If it's getting to be night time where you are keep a close eye on them, it gets worse at night. Run a cool mist vaporizer in their room if you have one.

It gets really scary and bad at night. My daughter had croup at 4 months and we did the following.

?Let her sleep elevated because when she laid flat, she would choke or cough

?Used a cool mist humidifier

?Anytime that she coughed at night or had a coughing spell, we would sit her up

?If the coughing spell gets really bad, cool air will help calm it down

The doctor recommended sitting in the shower with steam but it wasn't working fast enough. My daughter actually ended up getting admitted for Croup. They gave her a steroid and breathing treatments. She had a cough for 2-3 nights and then after being scared and not being able to sleep, I took her to the ER. Although Croup can be mild and it can pass on its' own, there are some cases where home remedies does not work. If you feel like your baby is getting worse, definitely take him/her to the doctor or hospital. Croup is scary because it mimics an asthma attack. I hope that your baby feels better. ??

My son used to get croup a lot. The doctor suggested wrapping him in a blanket and sitting outside for a few minutes if it was cold, sitting in the bathroom with the shower steaming, or opening the freezer door on your refrigerator and letting them breathe the cold air for a little bit. I hope your LO feels better soon, croup is not fun at all.

Thanks ladies! The cold air has been helping with the coughing and breathing but her fever is up to 103.1. Praying things stay calm and we don't have to make an ER visit tonight.

I thought my son had croup earlier this week and it ended up being pnemonia!! Scary stuff

My dd has croup right now. First week in daycare and she ended the week with croup. We took her in and got steroids last weekend. We are in the wet cough phase at this point. The only thing that has been helping is sleeping at an incline (books under her crib mattress), running a humidifier, cracking the bedroom window for cool air and taking her out on the front porch to breathe in the cool air when it gets bad. The Dr. told us to take her to the ER if she can't seem to catch her breath while coughing.
