Wow she sounds incredibly immature. I could deal with the rude comments until the one she said to your son. Totally uncalled for. Sounds like she's jealous that you won't have to work and bitter that her son has to support the family, despite that being what marriage and family is about! I'm sorry!

Sometimes I wish mother in laws would put their feelings aside and try to understand our decisions as parents.

My mil was a little upset that we found a home in the city that accommodates our growing family and is in our budget. It's an hour from her but since she doesn't like to drive she is throwing a fit that she won't see the baby who is due in a few weeks. She keeps telling my husband that when the baby is born he needs to go pick her up so she can spend his two weeks of vacation with him and baby at our new house....I on the other hand don't mind a one day visit but TWO WEEKS is not happening!

I think you are smart to hold back until she pays the money she owes. If she thinks that you need that to move, she's never going to pay you. Stay chill until you get the house thing all lined up. Ignore the tantrum. Eventually, she'll have to get over it.

I just don't know who says that to an 8 year old. She has been trying to sabotage this move forever! She texts my husband constantly about how it's the worst decision we'll ever make and she says things like "Once Ashley sees what it's like to cook and clean all day, she'll regret ever making you do this."

Her, my BIL, and DH's 91 year old grandma moved in here when they had a house fire. It was supposed to be for a few weeks until insurance placed them in a long term apartment/home. When she found out we were planning to move, she told the insurance company to stop looking for a place for them, that they were just staying with us. She didn't tell us this though. We kept asking when they were leaving and she kept on making excuses as to why there was a hold up.

It wasn't until my DH got really upset with her one day and demanded to know what was going on and she finally told him. They ended up living here a total of 3 months and instead of getting my house on the market in May, like originally planned, it's now going on July 1. ?

I would have quipped back, "actually sweetie, grandma decided she didn't want anything for her birthday, christmas, or mother's day to make sure we have enough $ to buy you stuff you want once I stop working". But I'm kind of a batch like that. Lol

She did write me the check before she left though, thank goodness!

Pp said my thought. I'd also take it straight to HER bank to make sure she has the funds & doesn't put a stop payment on it. I always do that with mil's checks.

We deposited and so far so good. I know she has the money, even if she has issues with me, she loves her son too much to do that. Plus, the three months she lived here for free, she was collecting nearly $3K per month from insurance!
