The needle may be bent

I used to use my mom's old machine but it started doing the same thing as yours (I can't remember what brand). I have a brother sewing machine and it works great. I use it to make quilts and it goes through the think layers with no problem.

I'm looking at the needle and it's not bent. Now I just realized I unthreaded the one that's underneath the needle and idk how to fix it. This sewing machine is so old and I would like to use it but I'm so confused and the instructions are not very clear

It's probably dirty. Filled with lint. My mom also has a super old kenmore sewing machine that I'm using to practice on until I get better. It kept jamming on me and it turns out it was just dirty. Cleaned it with a tooth brush and it was good to go. Look up videos on YouTube on how to get the bobbin going if you're having trouble with that.

I have used a machine that had to be threaded on both ends but I can't for the life of me remember how to do it. I have a machine that was given to me by my aunt (it was her mothers) I haven't even attempted to use it because I am not sure I even know how.

Check that the bottom needs cleaning out, old thread, lint, also if you have another needle I would change it it might just be very dull.

Also depending on the thickness of your fabric a specific needle might be needed

I have a bernina, it's Swiss made and expensive to maintain. Worth every penny though

Old machines have so many problems it could be any number of things.. But to start try the simple fixes: I would try replacing your needle with a new sharp one, rethread your machine, make sure your spools are on the machine properly, you could be starting your sewing ether too fast or too slow, sounds like your tension could possibly be a problem try readjusting that, and there should be a dial that adjusts the plate under your presser foot. It could be set wrong for the weight or type of fabric you're using. Are you using universal propose thread?

Please never buy a Janome brand machine they're horrible no matter what price range you're looking at! I recommend for a committed beginner/intermediate sewer the Husqvarna Viking, sturdy, reliable, easy to use, no bells and whistles to get confused over! I've been sewing for 13 years and it's still my go to machine in my collection! ? Besides my handy dandy surger. ?

I really don't recommend beginning sewing on an older machine you'll get discouraged easier, they're unpredictable more than half the time. It can turn you off of sewing forever! I don't want that. Sewing is so much fun and completely gratifying. ?
