They probably took her blood to measure her HCG levels. That tells them if she's actually pregnant. They'll most likely schedule further testing depending on what those results are. If she's got further questions, she needs to contact her midwife.

I agree with mag. Also, there is a blood test that can give an estimate but it has a wide variation. Like 40-40,000 can be 4-9 weeks along. Anywhere in that range. That's why they do the Ultrasound.

They confirm the pregnancy before doing anything else.

They gave her a urine test and it confirmed it and a blood test but that was it. I told her she needed to ask more questions.

They can kind of figure out how far along she is by her hcg levels. They're probably making sure she's actually pregnant. I had to do a urine it came back positive than they did blood to make sure. They're also probably going to monitor if her hcg levels are rising, depending on how far along she is they might not do an ultrasound right away.

They usually do blood first because nothing will show on an ultrasound until your beta levels are over a certain level..

It's not unusual. Every doctor will be a little different though. At my doctor, first they require a blood test to test HGC levels. They won't go any farther until this is done and the results are back. Then, they'll have an appointment where they may do a Pap smear and usually just have a question and answer session. If dating comes up as a question there, they may order an ultrasound but not all doctors have that equipment in their office. Many send you to a different department, where you make a separate appointment, or to a separate office that handles that. It all depends on the office and how they are set up.

Tori, after the 5 weeks or so hcg isn't really accurate for dating at all. When my sister didn't know her dates they scheduled her for an ultrasound based off her hcg levels. What was supposed to be a 10 week dating scan turned into her 19 week anatomy scan! My hcg levels were different by 50,000 at 7 weeks with 2 pregnancies. Beyond following doubling to confirm viability the hcg doesn't really tell them much about the dates of the pregnancy.

They won't give her a EDD until they know how far along she is... There is no way of giving her an accurate edd without a ultrasound until they know how far along she is.

As far as the blood work, all five of my pregnancies I had to do blood work before they would do anything else to make sure I was 100% pregnant and a estimate how far along. As frustrating it is, It takes time so be patient, or tell her to be patient. Lol

@ Kayla I think I'm the impatient one!!! She was all calm about it when I talked to her and I'm asking her 21 questions! Haha

Blood tests will reveal true gestation and gender too.

@chipmunkmama I completely agree, but if she's still early it could help give a time frame before her first ultra sound! Mine was all over the place, but it was pretty accurate for me. Than again I found out superr early!
