So we are renting out my FIL place. He recently moved in with his girlfriend so this house was just sitting empty and it was such a hassle for him to drive 40 mins every other day to check on the place.... so my husband and I moved in. We offered to pay him rent and anything he would need but he said just us being here saves him a ton of money and time. He did say we would need to pay the electricity which was an obvious. Since we have moved in there has been a number of issues, that we have fixed and spent a lot of money on. Well now it's the septic! We came home the other night and I was like oh my gosh the house reeks of poop. We went down stairs and the basement was completely flooded with about 2 feet of sewer. We immediately called my fil and told him and asked what to do. He said well it's obviously something you two did so get it fixed right now. Well My husband and I are only here at night time so there is a limited time for us to use the restroom here. We called MIL to see what she would do and she said "do not pay one penny on the septic there because that has been happening for years and my he won't ever take the time and money to fix it." We looked into how much it would be to have it fixed and it's easily 2 grand. We cannot afford that !!!! But what do we do ? We can't shower, use the restroom or cook here ???? I'm so upset !!! We payed 150$ for a good sewer snake and tried to snake it out and get rid of any clogs and there is none. Ugggg.

That does really suck but these things happen. Someone has to pay for it to be fixed and you guys are the ones living there, rent free too.
Just wait until you have your own house and you have to pay mortgage plus anything that breaks. It sucks but it's part of being an adult.
Do you have any family to stay with in the meantime?

We could stay with his mom for a little bit. I just don't know how to come up with the money ??

If you're living rent free, y'all should have been saving up money. That way y'all can buy your own place or have an emergency fund for things like this.

That happens if you flush the wrong stuff or don't have the septic cleaned out when you're supposed to. It can also happen if the septic isn't big enough or someone runs over the lines in the yard or plants a tree over the septic. It can be caused by a lot of issues, but overall, yea it needs fixed. I would offer to go halves on it and find someone willing to make payments. They will be able to tell you the source of the issue, too. Then, get something in writing! It doesn't matter if you don't pay rent. Just get something in writing to protect you and your FIL.

On top of that I'm not able to work this pregnancy, so my husbands salary goes to the truck payment, the phones, electric, credit cards, and food money :/

Do you know of anyone that will do a payment plan for it? Or can you get a loan/credit card? It's not ideal, but he's also not charging you rent, so it would still be cheaper than moving out and paying rent somewhere else.

Well it would be one thing if you payed rent... But you guys are living there free. You said you have a fund for your childs College maybe its time to pull from that. You can always save up and put it back. But its either spend 2k and keep living rent free or spend 2k+ finding a new place to live and having to pay rent or mortgage. Either way your going to end up spending something.
