Yes, you absolutely can skip rice cereal. Rice cereal has actually become pretty controversial in the last few years because it's unclear whether or not there is actually any benefit to giving it to babies. There are some schools of thought that say that babies can't even digest those types of foods until they're after a year old at the earliest. In order for your baby to be able to digest grains properly, they need to have an enzyme called amylase. Pancreatic amylase doesn't show up in babies until their molars come in (:
I believe it used to be recommended because it was a source of iron for babies, but there are definitely better ways for them to get iron.

Thank you for your reply. That's exactly what I needed to know!

I plan to skip cereal too. They do recommend oatmeal over rice if you do decide to do it. We are gonna start purées around 6 months.

Yes I agree with crunchy. Jude's dr said to use infant cereal oats as a source of iron bc they don't care for spinach and red meat ? I plan to lace some of Jude's homemade baby food with spinach anyway. I mix fruits n veggies and he eats everything. I'm steaming a batch of peaches and carrots now ?in my opinion rice cereal is empty calories.

We're skipping all together! I take an extra Iron supplements along with prenatal to help. My pedi said she doesn't worry as much in BF babies so we're 100% skipping it. We're on the BLW bandwagon ?

Skipping cereal. I might mix some oats in with some apples or peaches later down the road...

Amanda we do about a tablespoon of cooked oats with either peaches with carrots or apples with zucchini or green beans for breakfast. Jude loves it. In the evening it's strictly veggies and fruit.
