Baby Led Weaning

I've heard that apparently they do it different than when I had my last child- now called "Baby led weaning" where baby eats food in its original form (of course in small pieces)...instead of puréed...has anyone else heard this?? My first time seeing it was at a parents centre and the mom was giving baby (roughly 8 months old) pieces of fruit and vegetables (long celery pieces, broccoli, cantaloupe) and baby was munching away...I gasped...and I asked about meat and she said that small pieces of meat are given and anything they eat as a family is served to baby..not sure if she was referring to steak as well??... She said they skipped puréed food all together and start original solids when allowed...first foods are introduced steamed (carrots/apples) but others like bananas/avocados are given as is of course... Kinda makes me nervous but apparently baby's gag reflex is so strong that they realized baby's have this ability...idk I'm only hearing of this in the past two years.

We've chosen to do baby lead weaning. We're starting when Damien is 6 months. We've already started getting him use to sitting at the table and let him play with a spoon and sippy cup. While we are skipping purees and cereals, we are introducing "licks" of food like a pea squished between my fingers to develop texture and taste preferences.

We chose it for 2 main reasons. 1.. genetically the decks are stacked against him when it comes to weight so we feel starting him out with a healthy relationship too food is a step in the right direction, and 2.. we like the freedom and independence of it. It's great fine motor practice, but also allows us to eat simultaneously since we won't have to feed him and teaches him independence.

Yes I read about the fine motor part of it as well

We are doing BLW ? our pedi said 6 months and can sit unassisted! From 6-9 months you can do strips of food then once they learn how to pinch you can introduce smaller things like peas and corn.

With Millers Hypothyroidism they said weight gain can be an issue and I've been doing some research on BLW and it can help avoid over feeding and not stretching the stomach! I also like the idea of the independence it gives him which is something we're really want to instill in him from a young age!

I'm leaning towards this approach also. At 3 months I feel nowhere near ready to start him on food.

This is how my mom fed my siblings and I as soon as we got our first teeth. Plan on doing the same for Zaman under grandmas guidance.

I did this with my son and it worked beautifully...at 8months he ate a drumstick on his own even though he had no teeth!

It's important to wait until they can sit unassisted before you start

@AV188 yes I remember hearing it's important they can sit up alone first, that's vital

I thought about it but then I'm not sure. My friend's sister is all about it but about a month ago she gave her 1 year old a small chip and she choked on it. Neither parents knew cpr so they had to call 911

I know cpr so that's not my issue but I'm concerned that he won't know to chew something down completely and choke

I think I'm going to start with purées and then as more and more teeth come in I'll gauge what foods I can just give in small bites

We do combo blw & some purees. Ive always started with banana, steamed sweet potatoes & avocados, steamed apples, steamed carrots too. We never did chips or processed foods. Peas and other shelled veg i started as purees to avoid choking. Be warned blw can be very messy!

We wont start until after 6m, until then ebf. Im stashing milk & rotating to add to purees when we get there.
