opinions ladies

So this girl on my facebook posted saying that she took away her sons trick or treating privleges this year because she caught him stealing. He's 6 by the way. Do you think this is too harsh or would you have done the same thing?

He would get more than just his trick or treating taken away..

Trick or treating is a privilege, not a right. Definitely not harsh at all.

If that was my LO, he would be doing more than just losing out of trick or treating like chores to make him "earn" back the monetary value of the item he stole.

Tough love.

I've been threatened with trick or treating when I was little, my cousin lost his privileges of that when he was young too.

I've threatened it with my son.

Thankfully I've never had to take it away but this parent did everything right. But i agree with the other ladies, I would have also made him earn back the cost of said item.

Same thing if it was an escalated behavior or something that had happened before. Trick-or-treating is a privilege, not a right. Not going one year is not going to scar the kid. On the contrary, it will probably be a lesson that sticks with him.

Nope that's good. My daughter last year stole a lollipop out of the store and when we were walking tot he car I saw it hidden in her pocket. I made her walk back into the store and tell the worker that she stole it and she was returning it and to apologize. The lady looked at me and was like it wasn't a big deal cause it was a lollipop. I told the lady that it is a big deal because if I make it okay or she made it okay for her to steal because it was just a a lollipop my daughter would think it's okay to steal other things as well. She also got things taken away and no dessert that night.

It's her son. She can punish him how she likes but my first impression is what does stealing have to do with Halloween? I prefer my punishments to be more closely related to the crime. To each his own.

Sounds fair to me honestly. Stealing isn't cool.

Neither is shaming your children on social media but that's not my business lol.

At six years old the punishment doesn't match the crime. The distance of time is too great between what he did and what he'll be missing out on.

Not harsh. That's his punishment and I would do the same if it were my sons.

My son kept running off in the store last year (5 yrs at the time). I told him if he didn't quit he wasn't going trick or treating that night. He ended up staying with my mom while I took DD out. Lucky for him I only took 1 of the 3 nights away.

I guess ill be the odd one. I do think it's a bit harsh. At only 6, I feel he is still learning and taking away something fun that only happens once a year, that kids very much look forward to is a bit much.

I don't think that is too harsh.

But I find it strange that parents feel compelled to share that info on Facebook. So weird.

I don't think it's too harsh. My daughter is much younger than that so I haven't dealt with something like that yet but if we had been caught stealing as kids our punishment would have been a lot harsher than just having trick or treating taken away. Stealing isn't just misbehaving, it's a crime. You definitely want your kids to realize this so they don't grow up thinking shoplifting is ok and end up getting arrested.

You guys are worried about taking away Halloween? Something that happens every year... my parents took away prom when I was in high school because I left the house without telling them first, in broad daylight, to go the gas station. At the time I thought it was way out of proportion, but now I understand anything could have happened to me and they wouldn't have known. I learned my lesson to follow the rules for the rest of the time I lived there.

At 6 years old most child development research would tell you punishment should be a logical response to the action and should be focussed on making right whatever they have done wrong.

So unfortunately I think taking away trick or treating is way too far away for the child to understand what he is being punished for. A punishment for a child that young shouldn't happen a week from now.

And it depends what the stealing was... did he take something from a store, or did he put a toy in his pocket at school? Is this an ongoing problem or first time?

Well thats what I'm assuming. If it was an ongoing problem I don't think it's to harsh. But if my child stole something I would ensure that he knew what he did was wrong. And depending on the severity ground him ect.
