This happened to us! Baby caught my cold ? and at two weeks had a rectal temp of 100.5. I called the pedi’s office and they said guidelines recently changed and that we were okay unless it went up to 101. They said if it went up to 101, she wasn’t eating, was crying uncontrollably, etc to go to the children’s hospital. It never got higher than 100.5 thankfully. Our 4 yr old had only been home from her 6 day stay at the children’s hospital a few days and the thought of going back was awful!!!

Her temp is now 100.5 so my husband is taking her to Children's while I stay home with our 16 month old until we know what's going on. This is terrifying. Plus I've heard a fever in newborns requires a 3 night stay. Anyone have any experience?

Typically there isn't much to be concerned about unless it's over 101. If the baby is eating like normal, and having plenty of wet diapers and generally behaving normally, then they don't do much.

If fever is over 101, they may recommend Tylenol to lower the fever, however especially at this age you have the same luck lowering the fever by just keeping a warm rag on their head, or wetting their hair and letting it air dry, or giving a warm bath. That'll lower their temp. If it continues to climb, or baby acts very lethargic (more so than just sleeping), or fever gets over 103, then definitely take the baby in.

Temp of 100.4 or greater is considered "neonatal fever". Any fever in an infant
