Mono
My MIL was just diagnosed with mono this past week. She was supposed to be the one who was watching my older child while we were in the hospital, but that is not going to happen now. My hubby is taking her to lunch today to let her know that he feels safer with her staying away until after she is fully healed. I feel like a battle is about to begin. Would any of you feel safe with a family member with mono coming around your newborn child or taking care of a 2 year old?

Absolutely not!
You're doing the right thing

No way!!! You are definitely doing the right thing. Hopefully she will understand.

Absolutely not.
My husband got it last year and I didn't even want him around us at all and we didn't have a newborn. I made him keep a mask on and he stayed in the bedroom for weeks.

No

If she doesn't understand, then she is the one with a problem. You aren't creating any drama, you're keeping your babies safe.

Mono is no fun and it's a lengthy illness, she should understand. I would stay as far away as possible to be safe. I do think it has to be passed via bodily fluids but still, you never know. She might forget and kiss one of your kids or something. Not worth the risk.

Your hubby should not be anywhere near your MIL if she has mono... he can very easily come home and transfer it to you!!! That should have been a phone call conversation.

The kicker is she SWEARS she is not contagious. They have been on the outs for a month now, so he did not get close to her. She is taking this decision personally, like he is trying to withhold her seeing her grandkids due to spite or something. We are baffled about her reaction. How could she not see the potential harm she could be inflicting on her grandkids? She is actively putting her needs above theirs and it is eye opening.

No way. And she should understand you and your husbands reasoning. But I know what you mean... My mother in law would probably not take that news very well either.

Let her throw a fit. She's sick, end of story. You have the right to keep your family safe. I get it sucks for her but the baby will still be small and cute once she's feeling better.

Aww honestly its only contagious through saliva. So no I wouldnt let her watch your kid while your in labor but I dont think its totally necessary that she has to stay away. At least I know I wouldnt do that to my mother in law or mother. But I know a lot of people would love an excuse to keep their mother in laws away lol

Your babies health comes first. Don't worry about hurting anyone else's feelings
deleted-user·
Ummmm, ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!
SHE shouldn't even want to be around your babies until she's well.

For the amount that I kiss and share food with my toddler, I can't imagine being able to refrain. Even when I have a cold, I can't just not kiss my baby, even if I try!
So no, grandma, I'm not risking our household for your negligence.

She told.my husband that she wouldn't kiss or share anything with my son, but had the nerve of asking him to give her a kiss when they met up yesterday. If she would forget at a simple lunch date, what makes her think she will be able to resist kissing my son while watching him for a few days.
The most appalling part of this whole thing is, she had the nerve to say "I shouldn't have said anything" when he told her no to watching our son because it's too risky. So she would have rather kept quiet and infected him with us none the wiser? That is the picture of selfishness and irresponsibility.

It's so easy to pass. Not just through kissing.
Sharing food, even bowl of chips. Or sharing a tube of toothpaste. Or just touching your face and not washing hands properly before touching things. Keep your kids away.

Isn't it only transferred in saliva?

Heck no! No sickness anywhere near a family with newborns.
