???This. This is why I hate living in the desert. (Although there is part of me that wonders if this bizarre group had any kind of pleasant interaction before realizing they'd made a poor choice in meeting location) ???

If that bug ever got into my house I would burn it down!
Renee·
It's called a date beetle. They're generally harmless to humans, despite their size but they're considered a "pest" because they destroy date crops.
Fun fact: the females (without assistance from a male) give birth to 4 or 5 male babies inside a date (or other similar fruit), wait til the first male matures, mate with him, then eat all the original babies. Once that loving, motherly chore is completed they birth about 70 more babies (eggs) who all go on to procreate together.
And just to make it more fun, they fly!

That birth story is horrifying.
Renee·
It really is, cams. Nature's brutality is no joke.

That thing is huge, everything you just said about them is terrifying lol. Is it in a paint can?
Renee·
Our dogs water bowl. Thank goodness, it's his outside bowl. I would not be nearly so calm if I had woken up to that inside the house!

God no. I live in the Mojave desert, I saw a sunspider for the first time the other day. The desert has bugs I have never seen before. We had one of those in your pic saunter in like it owned the place last month.
Renee·
I live in the Mojave, too. Sun spiders are one of the few creatures I will actually step on instead of relocating them outside. They're vicious.
We have a black widow in the garage right now. We've located her web and her dinner selections just haven't found her yet.
Renee·
Bentley: it was about 2 inches long. I've seen them bigger.

That thing is horrendous! I now feel so icky ughh and it's making me swat imaginary things off my skin ?
deleted-user·
