I messed up, y'all.
A little back story...I grew up with all kinds of phobias-bugs, water, the dark-it all creeped me out. I still struggle with water and bugs, but have worked very hard to overcome my phobias and have been diligent to do what I can to keep my children from being afraid of anything. Up until 3 days ago, I was doing really well. Until the damn centipede tried to crawl inside my pant leg. I freaked out. I screamed, I swatted, I danced and stomped. I finally shook it's 3 inch long, pincher wearing body off and I crushed it with my shoe with all the fear in my body. Not only did I kill a creature that was just being itself (a no no in our home), my 4 year old watched the whole event, screaming and crying along with me. He has spent the last 3 days afraid to open the door because of bugs, swearing he sees "brown things" on the floor trying to get him. I seriously traumatized my child. I know it seems kind of silly, and maybe he'll get over it, but I feel horrible. He has never been afraid of bugs. He was taught not to kill bugs and now wants to "stomp all the bad bugs". Help. How do I get him past this?

Maybe try explaining to him that bugs aren't bad, you just got scared because it surprised you. Try to use this as a learning experience of trying not to jump to conclusions I guess? Get him to focus more on your actions and how to prevent something like that again and maybe take him to a local farm or such where they have bugs to show him the benefits of having them around.

That's a good idea. I don't know of any farms near us, but I could probably find something online.
I made sure to tell him that momma's reaction was silly and that I was just surprised.

Even if you live in a city area you may be able to find some community plots or try taking him to a farmers market and talk to some of the people there ? and buy some yummy treats

This is my life. I'm afraid of everything. I hate it and I absolutely do not want my children to live in fear. The other day my daughter was like dad don't take the freeway! I hate the freeway! ? I've failed.

There has to be a way we can overcome it, Nes. They're young. It can be undone.
