Super breast feeders...help!
Super breast feeders...help!
My friend gave birth a week ago to a very healthy (9.13 lb!) little girl. She is EBF which has been going very well until 3 days ago. She said that her daughter wakes up around 10pm and will not latch, just screams and screams and doesn't fall back to sleep until around 4am. She said during the day she has no problems with latching or falling back to sleep, it's just at night. She said the only thing that calms her is sucking on her (moms) finger. Last night she finally got her to latch and within minutes of finishing she threw it all back up. I suggested maybe reflux or gas is the problem, but I didn't have the most successful breastfeeding experience with my son, so if all of you have other suggestions/help, I would appreciate it.

I feel like I went through this with both my kids. Can she try a soother? Or maybe try laying down so the milk isn't pouring out. It's really important for mama to be relaxed and calm too :) also, is she drinking enough water??

Also both my kids were projectile vomiters. It didn't bother them, didn't bother me. Just part of being a mom I guess :) ️every baby is different

I will suggest laying down while feeding. She said she is well hydrated but her production is heavy (her LC told her to pump to build her supply which I thought was weird). She's trying not to use soothers, but I did suggest trying one since finger sucking seems to help.

Sounds like colic just because it's a certain time.. Could be wrong tho.
She shouldn't pump for the first 6 weeks it can possibly ruin it for baby. It'll flow out too fast for lo.
Keep encouraging her and sometimes it's just hard. Maybe lo could also be favoring one of the breast more. She could also try a nursing shield too. I know my 4 month old at exactly that age would not latch on to my right side. Maybe she can try different positions with lo too. Like pp said laying down and maybe the football hold too.

Thanks, chelsee. I'm glad to hear my thoughts on pumping weren't off. I'll keep offering her all of the suggestions I'm getting.

Sounds like colic. Dd was colic and cried 12 hours straight everyday. She cried from 8am-8pm. Thankfully she slept at night or I'd have lost it. But she'd cry as soon as she latched, after she latched, before she latched. She'd cry between swallows.

Also maybe walking lo around the house or rocking to try to calm lo down first and then she could try again when lo settles down. My 4 month old still likes me to walk him around the house. As soon as I will stand up he will immediately quit crying. Sry she's having such a hard time! It's never fun! :-(

Sounds very familiar to my experience having overactive letdown with colliepuppie 1. At night I'd have to pump for 3 minutes to get over the first letdown and then nurse on that side. I also would have her suck on my pinkie to calm down before latching her on to minimize the air she swallowed.
Have her check with her local LLL chapter. One of the leaders may be able to help. That's how we figured out what was going on with me .

Thanks, collie. I'll suggest that as well. She has mentioned several times how good her supply is (which she is understandably proud of) but it may just be too much for the baby at this point.
