Saw this on IG what do you think?
It was a picture of a father soothing his newborn with his own nipple. Almost like he was trying out 'breastfeeding'.
I don’t find this odd at all, actually. I don’t breastfeed, didn’t breastfeed either of my boys. But if my newborn gets fussy & his brother has hid all his pacis (?) then I’ll “dry nurse” and use my nipple to comfort him.
My Dh wouldn’t do this because he’s extremely weird about things touching his nipples lol but if he did, i wouldn’t even think twice about it.
Eta: I also understand that dads don’t get that extreme bond that mothers do. That’s just a fact. They don’t breastfeed, the didn’t grow the baby, they don’t have “mothers intuition.” If this is something that can build that bond up, by all means, go for it.
I mean, kind of strange, but I get the desperation if daddy can't do anything with baby. I remember taking a shower when dd1 was like 3 months old. Daddy couldn't get her to stop crying so he attempted to give her boob. Hah, it worked. That's the only time it's ever been done. I thought it was funny because he was so desperate. If he attempted that all the time.. yeah I don't think I'd be too comfortable with that.
I don't understand why he did this. I think it's weird and gross. I'd think it was just as weird and gross if he was trying to soothe her by letting her suck on his fingers or other body parts because there is no reason for that. Pacifiers and bottles are washed and sanitized and the breastmilk that comes from our breasts has antibodies to protect LO from any germs that would be on our nipples, making them safe for baby to suck on. We don't let our kids stuck on our fingers, faces, arms etc. So I don't see any reason for this. ?
I guess it's "weird" because it's outside of the typical norm but if its done culturally then it would become a normal standard. Dd tried when she was a newborn but when she went for it dh's hair poked her in the face and it was the most funny expression she started crying ?
DH was holding a kitten once and it tried to feed off of him he didn't find it as funny as I did ??
I’ve prayed the baby would latch onto DH one day just so he can see how it feels ? lol
Although, when I first started pumping before going back to work when DS was about 4 weeks old, I was telling DH how utterly (no pun intended ?) sore my poor nipples were. He said, “pshh- it can’t be THAT bad ?”. I told him to take a wail at that breast pump. He happily put it on and I’ll tell you right now, I thought I was going to have to pull him down from the second floor! He jumped so facking high and screamed like the biggest little girl EVER! ???????????????? He tried to rip it off but it was mid suction. And the pump was literally set to 3! I should’ve jacked it up to 10 ?. I just almost peed my pants just thinking back to it. It was the FUNNIEST thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I’d pay any amount of money to have had it on video
@diamond, he wouldn't want to do it because he thinks the baby wouldn't really like hairy nipples. So the "if" would never happen. I also wouldn't allow it because it isn't necessary. Just because it's his baby too, it doesn't mean he should be imitating the breastfeeding process. So once again, what other people do is their business. No harm done. ?
@baby bat yes the photo was painted in a positive light. I thought it was a very lovely photo. But everyone else seemed to have a serious issue with it.
I wouldn’t say inappropriate, but i guess unconventional is more the word? I can understand in a moment of desperation with mommy not there if baby won’t be soothed by binky and is just needing comfort. I’d probably just laugh if I saw my SO do it honestly. But I wouldn’t expect it to be a regular thing necessarily.
@yaya, yes I’ve heard of that. Last time I heard of a lactating man, was when a gay couple adopted children and wanted to be able to breastfeed them. It’s absolutely fascinating. When I was a teen my friends brother was put on a medication to help with whatever issue he was having, and he had to stop that medication because he started lactating. Poor boy felt so bad about himself when that happened.
@yaya really???? That's crazy! Under what circumstances could a man lactate? I'll have SO bf the next baby ?
Why not? It’s okay to put plastic pacifiers, bottle nipples, female nipples, but not male nipples in a child’s mouth? Why is that? I’m not gonna lie, my first reaction was that, that’s a little weird. Which is probably because I’ve never seen a baby latch onto a males nipple before. But if baby is only trying to latch for comfort and not for feeding, I see no reason not to give mama’s nipples a rest and allow dad to pacify the baby. Breastfeeding hurts at first for some women, and I’ve seen so many women commiserating with each other about how their baby is using them as a pacifier and that their child won’t take a rubber pacifier and they wish they could take a break from it. This is a potential solution to that issue as long as everyone in that situation is comfortable and willing.
I tell my husband to give his nipple to our daughter lol but he takes it as a joke so I guess lol
