When to Start?

I was going to just take my son to the zoo for his first birthday and wait till he was maybe 3 to throw a big party but his grandparents are offering to pay for it and to let me plan because they want to celebrate with family and friends. My son is 7 months old so I was wondering if I should start planning on things like decorating, or should I wait a bit. When did you start planning?
