Getting membranes stripped..

I am 39 weeks exactly tomorrow and have a doctor's appointment. My doctor will most likely be stripping my membranes. How effective was this for any of you ladies? As of my last appointment on 4/3/18, I was only 1cm dilated, 25% effaced, and baby boy's head was at a -3. I don't remember having had this done with any of my other pregnancies, surprisingly. So what should I expect from this procedure? Kinda nervous..
