toddler and toothpaste

How did u train ur lo to spit out after brushing. My lo still dont get it and instead of spitting it out he's swallowing it despite me showing him myself brushing and spitting after. I end up wiping his teeth with facewasher for now. Will swallowing tootpaste cause harm?
