Dilation question

This might sound stupid to y'all but I'm a FTM. Does everyone get checked for dilation and when? Or do the Drs only check you if you're having contractions etc. I had my 37 week appt today and forgot to ask. I just didn't know if it was routine or if they only did it if they had a reason / concern.

My doctor checks at 36 weeks since she's doing a GBS anyway. I think she's checks weekly after that. I don't remember with my first and I've been having contractions and my cervix was "super soft" at the 36w check so she checked me again. Almost at a 2. She said if I haven't gone into labor by next appointment she can do a membrane sweep when she checks if I want her to.

I had my doctor check at my 36 week appointment when she did my strep test since I was nekkid anyway ? Other than that, my doctor told me its up to me if/when I want things checked out

I got checked yesterday at 38 weeks only because my husband is a commercial fisherman and his boat leaves for 3 months June 16th. I'm due June 10th so if the baby is late we have to make arrangements for him to meet the boat some where. Crazy fishing life!!

I'm 37 weeks and haven't been checked. I'm not having contractions, and I wasn't checked with my first until I was induced. I'd rather not be checked until I'm in labor.

I'm 37 weeks and haven't been checked. I requested not to until 39 weeks, when I'll get a sweep. I don't want to know since it can change at the last minute. I feel like too many woman expect themselves to be dialated very early on and get hung up on what they learn.

I had my 36 week appointment last week and my midwife said that they don't check you now until your 40 weeks, unless medically needed. The reason being they don't want to interfere with anything etc.

I'm in Australia.

Here in the U.K you're not checked until you're in labour. No need to as baby will come when it's ready.

I asked to be checked at 36 weeks because my husband was heading out of town and I wanted to know if I had progress (even though I know it could change) but my doctor said that it isn't standard until 39 weeks for their office.

@shelley yes that's what made me wonder! I'm gonna ask my dr at my next appt how they do it there. I'll be 38 weeks next time.

I was wondering the same thing! So I asked at my 36 week appointment because I've seen so many people say they get checked around this time and my midwife told me they check AT 39 WEEKS... and still thought it was a little weird because I know people who got checked before but reading these comments made me feel better. 39 weeks is normal?

Thanks ladies! I've heard it basically means nothing like a lot of you said. I was just curious if everyone gets it done. I guess it depends a lot on the dr. Not sure if I'll get checked or want too. I hear it's not the best feeling lol.

My Dr will let you decide if you want checks or not. I prefer to be checked. I will start on Tuesday at my 36 week appt. It's up to you.

My doctor doesn't start doing checks until 39 weeks, unless you tell her you've been having a lot of contractions. She says either way it won't matter if your dilated a 0 or a 3, baby will come when ready.☺

Honestly I see no point in being checked at all.

I'll get Checked at 39 weeks maybe because I can get a sweep then. I mite just wait till 40 weeks have it done then.

I was checked at my 36 week appointment but I think only because I mentioned I was having soooo much pressure, it's unbearable. She said I was 50% effaced no dilation. I have my 37 week appointment on Tuesday, I'm going to opt out of her checking me... I just feel like at this point I'd rather not know. If I am, it's just going to make me nervous and anxious... and if I'm not, I'm just going to feel impatient so I'm over this dilation thing. Plus, the check is uncomfortable lol

I'm 37 weeks and I also have not been checked. My doctor says she doesn't see the need for it but with my other two kids they started checking at 36 weeks and I ended up being induced at 42weeks for both.

Last pregnancy my doctor checked me at 39 weeks and will probably do the same this pregnancy but I'm not in a rush nor do I care to know where I am because it doesn't make a difference to me. I avoid getting check down there since I always have enough pressure

I was checked at 36 due to possible leaking and my first was born at 36, I skipped at 37, and I will probably be checked at 38. My doctor leaves it up to me.

They started checking me at 35 weeks. She said because it's my third. Usually it's 36 weeks at my doctors appointment.

I'm almost 38 weeks with second baby & I've never been checked except during actual labor.

It's pretty standard to be checked but there isn't really any evidence supporting the need to be & getting checked *only* tell you where you are at that moment, not anything about onset of labor or how it will progress.

I don't get checks.
