A statement will provide a child with full time 1:1 support. So they will have an additional adult with them all day. It depends on their needs and the senco at the school will help you apply for a statement but they take a good while to come through unless the needs are really severe (as in the child is unable to function in the classroom without an adult). They are also not easy to get as obviously they require a large amount of funding.

How old is your son? And have the school ever mentioned that they'd like to apply for funding for him? Does he have an iep (an education plan where he will have individual targets to meet and strategies for how to meet his targets)? It might be worth speaking to the senco and just expressing concern. X

He's 8, apparently everyone in his school has an iep it's something they started a few years ago. I'm going to meet with senco as it's getting a joke now I don't feel like his school understand he has these conditions! Apparently he should have a behaviour plan but his teacher says he doesn't! I don't want him treated different but there are different ways to deal with these conditions:(

That's a tricky one because unfortunately if the school don't agree that 1:1 support is essential then it's unlikely that they'll be very helpful with the application for a statement. It's probably more likely that they'll provide a few hours of support a week internally, so use TA's already in the school. Is he meeting expectations for his age at school? X

I don't know if he really needs it myself I need to talk to the school and find out what they feel ect... I didn't really know about statements and what there for until yesterday. I'm also not 100% sure if he's meeting targets, now I know who I need to speak with in school maybe we will get somewhere with helping him. Xx

I don't think he's too far behind TBH, but I guess it's worth talking to the school to see how they feel and what should be in place ect.. it's so hard! Is your son on meds? Xx

Unfortunately if he's not too far behind then they'll probably say he's fine without support in school ? I'd ask for a meeting with his class teacher and the senco. Just write a list of things that are on your mind and they should be able to book some time aside for you. Hope you can get the support you need x

Children who make progress with support at school are on individual education plans. These break down their learning into smaller sizeable chunks or targets they work on short term within class and individually with an adult or in small groups. Children have to have been on an IEP and making some progress, but not enough (given the fact they are supported- this means the learning gap is increasing instead of being bridged) and the statement will mean that the school will be able to support them more and hopefully this means their learning will progress at a faster rate and bridge the gap between their peers. There has to be evidence that the learning gap isn't closing with an IEP before a statement will be considered. It's a huge amount of work to apply for a statement and the school will not have taken this decision lightly. They have your child's best interest at heart. Usually local authorities need a huge amount of persuading before they award the school the statement for the child- hence the task of collating all the evidence.

Statements are rolling over to EHCP (educational health care plans) so anyone who is trying to get one will get this and not a statement.

Being statemented or having a EHCP won't always get you a 1:1. This will be assessed on the needs of the child and usually dependant on the school.

I was an LSA in a secondary school and we mostly offered hover support. The only children who got a 1:1 in my time there were the children in wheelchairs x
